Why Earn a Converged Broadcast Media Degree?

In the Converged Broadcast Media program, you'll receive a comprehensive education in media convergence, broadcast television and their social media and internet components. In addition, you'll learn about live TV news broadcasting, live on-location production, sports, entertainment and political events coverage.

Our coursework examines a wide range of subjects such as:

News media analysis
Shooting and editing for television
Writing and reporting for radio, television and the internet

Electives offer opportunities for sports broadcasting, TV news production, directing and broadcast production, radio and television announcing, or videography.

While pursuing your degree, you can simultaneously earn a certificate in television news producing, electronic media management or Spanish language media.

Internships are required in this major and are heavily stressed in the department. Internships allow you to gain valuable work experience and earn academic credit. Internship opportunities abound due to the university's location within the North Texas region, which is ranked the nation's fifth-largest media market.

Converged Broadcast Media Degree Highlights

You'll have access to and gain experience with the same equipment and software tools used by industry professionals.

Our faculty members are internationally recognized scholars, seasoned media professionals and award-winning documentary producers. Their books are used in university courses throughout the world, and faculty-produced films and programs have aired on network television and at international media festivals.

Faculty members also work for and have been recognized by the Broadcast Education Association, the National Association of Broadcasters, the Television Academy Foundation and the Society of Professional Journalists, among other national and international organizations.

You can hone your skills by working at one of our two award-winning student media outlets. Our 100,000-watt radio station (KNTU-FM) and cable television station (ntTV) have won awards on the local, state and national levels. Both media outlets have active websites staffed by our students.

Courses are designed to provide students with ample and unique opportunities to learn from and work with expert faculty members committed to preparing students for future careers in the media industry or academia.

Advanced production of news and informational content for radio, television and the Internet. Project-oriented curriculum giving advanced students experience creating podcasts, marketing videos, mini-docs and other digital content for cross-platform distribution.

Introduction to the organization and function of the major media industries across societies, nations and time periods. Provides students with knowledge of how media industries operate, why they work as they do, and the broader theoretical and practical implications of media industry structure and function.

An introduction to creating and writing for half-hour and hour-long series through individual and collaborative TV writers’ room environments.

A critical examination of various youth media and cultures in post-war America. The course addresses popular teen films and TV and considers how young people use, value, produce, and find meaning in media across different contexts.
