The Fashion Design undergraduate program will prepare you for a dynamic global industry that plays a vital role in people's economic, cultural, and social lives. Here you will gain the professional skills to develop sustainable fashion and take a fashion design idea from sketch to construction and a finished garment. We employ design process and "design thinking" to educate in design development through an emphasis on art and design research, fashion history and fashion industry analysis.

Why Earn a Fashion Design Degree?

Seeing your final product worn and appearing in editorial spreads are very fulfilling aspects of the program that create a great sense of accomplishment. Fashion design work offers a good sense of teamwork and collaboration.

At CVAD, Fashion Design graduates learn to create sustainable products and manufacturing processes. Besides working on initial designs, your work requires you to solve problems, research trends, understand production methods, and find sources for needed supplies.

Fashion Design Degree Highlights

Students learn from faculty members who have experience as successful fashion designers, jurors of exhibitions and are active members of professional organizations.

You will learn in a new 238,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2019 with state-of-the-art equipment and fabrication labs in the four-story, open-concept building.

The UNT Fashion Design undergraduate program is fifth among public schools in the U.S. and 64th in the world among public and private schools, according to CEOWORLD magazine, March 2022.
UNT is the only university in the region that has a fashion design program in a college devoted to visual art and design. We also offer both B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees in fashion design.
The College of Visual Arts and Design is one of the nation's most comprehensive visual arts schools and is ranked one of the best in the Southwest.

Fashion Design Degree Courses You Could Take

Fashion Design: Introduction to Industrial Sewing Techniques (3 hrs)
Introduction to machinery and construction techniques used in the mass production of apparel. Student projects focus on unlined garment construction.
Fashion: Patternmaking I (3 hrs)
Introduction to basic flat patternmaking techniques. Development of bodice, skirt and sleeve variations. Construction of muslin samples. Participation in the fashion design entry portfolio is required to pass this course.
Fashion Design: Advanced Industrial Sewing Techniques (3 hrs)
Advanced construction methods; professional techniques of garment construction utilizing modern industrial equipment; tailoring and finishing.
Fashion Drawing (3 hrs)
Drawing the fashion figure from the live model. Various media. Concentration on developing a personal style and proper presentation of designs for industry.
Fashion: Draping (3 hrs)
To prepare the student for a career in the field of fashion design; draping method of creating patterns, advanced design, and garment construction are instructed. Fitting and professional construction methods are also taught.
Introduction to Fashion Design (3 hrs)
Overview of fashion as art and as an industry, including manufacturing processes, terminology and line organization. Principles and elements of design as applied to fashion.
