UNT's Media Entrepreneurship and Innovation Certificate offers coursework that helps students use modern technology and innovative thinking to create media companies that will continue to thrive in the future. Classes cover topics such as game design in interactive media, web design as well as content in leadership and entrepreneurship for media professionals.

Media Entrepreneurship and Innovation Certificate Highlights

UNT is located within the fifth-largest media market in the country, offering access to numerous outstanding internship opportunities at advertising agencies throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Our student organizations are regularly recognized as among the best in the nation and provide students with valuable connections, mentorship opportunities and the chance to learn from alumni and other working professionals.
Students have opportunities for supervised, intensive practical experience working with SWOOP, AGENZ or GRAVITAS, the national advertising campaigns competition.
Students can take coursework outside the unit with school approval to help them explore new opportunities in media.
Students have opportunities for supervised and collaborative work in the required Media Entrepreneurship and Innovation Lab.
The Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism at UNT is among the nation's top schools for journalism and mass communication, with undergraduate and graduate degree programs that prepare students for careers in print and digital journalism, broadcast journalism, advertising, public relations and photojournalism.

Courses

Media Innovation Lab (3 hrs)
Students develop, build and test their ideas at the intersection of intre/entrepreneurship, technology and emerging media. Students will launch a new media venture or exercise intrapreneurial skills and build solutions for an established media organization.
Game Design for Journalism (3 hrs)
Fundamentals of game design are taught demonstrating how to integrate games into digital storytelling on behalf of media communication disciplines such as journalism, advertising and public relations. Game mechanics are explored and evaluated to engage audiences with news events, social issues, or on behalf of a client or product.
Web Design for Journalism (3 hrs)
Course is an overview of online design and an introduction to coding for designers, with an emphasis on thinking mobile first. Students will work on front-end coding skills and investigate the affordances of various languages and libraries for web design.
Advertising and Public Relations for Social Good (3 hrs)
Advertising practitioners encourage consumers to purchase products, and the same toolbox can be used to change other types of behavior. Employs classic advertising techniques to promote pro-social behaviors. Explores the use of advertising skills outside of the advertising agency environment and across a variety of media platforms.
Strategic Social Media (3 hrs)
In a collaborative atmosphere, students explore strategic applications of a variety of social media platforms used for strategic communications and journalism. Students are challenged to bring new ideas to the classroom while adapting social media tools to traditional communications planning and measurement methods.
Media Entrepreneurship and Innovation (3 hrs)
Course provides an overview of the current and future state of media and what it takes to become an entrepreneur. Students will learn how to start a business in media, find customers and pitch a business idea.
