New Media Art is an interdisciplinary and collaborative discipline that focuses on our relationship with technology as an emergent tool for creating contemporary art. This practice is rooted in the historical traditions of avant-garde and experimental art-making and responds to the rapid pace of technological development. Subjects in New Media Art include experimental filmmaking, generative art, digital fabrication, performance, virtual and augmented reality and experimental sound.

Why Earn a New Media Art Minor?

If you're interested in emergent technological and interdisciplinary research across a broad spectrum, New Media Art may be for you!

The minor includes experimental studies in filmmaking, generative art, digital fabrication, performance, virtual and augmented reality and experimental sound.

As emerging contemporary artists, students in New Media Art engage in a range of research, theory, and practice as makers that consider a range of contemporary venues. This includes the gallery, museum, internet, microcinema, performance site, festival, and experimental venues.

New Media Art Minor Highlights

You also will have an array of audio, visual and other related equipment available for checkout.
Our faculty members are active artists and scholars whose works are displayed in venues such as the MoMA PS1 art center in New York, the Arnolfini in England, the National Museum of China and the Mejan Labs in Sweden.
The program is also involved with UNT's Initiative for Advanced Research in Technology and the Arts, which provides unique opportunities to collaborate with students and faculty members in the College of Engineering, the College of Music and the Department of Media Arts, among others.
UNT's proximity to Dallas and Fort Worth also offers a wealth of experiences and resources.
To provide other insights and knowledge, numerous renowned artists, designers and scholars are brought to campus.
There are possibilities for exhibiting your work on campus and at local galleries.

Beginning New MediaAnalog and Avant-Garde (3 hrs)
Introduction to analog, avant-garde and experimental form, style, and content in new media.
FoundationsSpace (Physical, Temporal and Virtual) (3 hrs)
Explores multiple conceptions of space, ranging from physical objects to metaphorical space.
FoundationsNarrative and Representation (3 hrs)
Emphasizes multiple levels of representation ranging from the physical to the intangible.
Intermediate New MediaNet Art (3 hrs)
Seminar/studio course focusing on the art and criticism of the internet as an artistic tool. Key concepts include

Introduction to the fundamentals of coding and computer science as a creative medium.
Beginning New Media: Time and Movement (3 hrs)
Introduction to the fundamentals of ordering information in time through new media platforms and outputs. Sequences of still images, interactivity, modes of filming and editing sound and moving images.
