Risk Management and Insurance Certificate Highlights

Our students in the Risk Management and Insurance program have earned scholarships from local chapters of the Society of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters (CPCU), the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS), the Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) and Texas Risk and Insurance Professional Society (TRIPS).
The Beta Zeta Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma focuses on the professions of insurance, risk management and actuarial science and offers guest speakers and networking opportunities with business professionals, résumé and interviewing workshops, and other activities.
Several courses offered by the Risk Management and Insurance program qualify for waivers for professional designation exams, giving students a head start on obtaining professional designations.

Risk Management and Insurance Certificate Courses You Could Take

Corporate Risk Management (3 hrs)
Study of financial effects of risk on businesses institutions; identification and evaluation of risk; selection of risk treatment/financing tools; implementation and review of tools used; probability analyses of data and financial evaluation of alternative tools.
Insurance Company Operations (3 hrs)
This course provides an overview of both the broader operations of the insurance industry as well as the internal operations of a typical property-liability insurance company. Students will be exposed to many of the specific job functions within a typical property-liability insurance company. Students will also learn to navigate and interpret insurance company financial statements.
Property/Liability Risk Management and Insurance (3 hrs)
The course provides a survey of commercial exposures to property and liability insurance contracts. Students will develop the ability to understand, and navigate, the content of various property and liability insurance contracts in resolving claim coverage scenarios.
Introduction to Risk Management and Insurance (3 hrs)
Examination of risk and insurance with an emphasis on the fundamental principles of risk management and the insurance mechanism, various insurance products, and an overview of insurer operations and the insurance industry. Recommended for all students, regardless of major field of interest. This course also serves as a basis for more advanced RMIN courses.
