The program’s curriculum meets the criteria for the credential as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor in the State of Texas and serves as a robust foundation for graduate study.
The program provides rigorous courses taught by clinically trained, licensed and experienced faculty who have a rich history delivering academic instruction in higher education. The program offers an integrated model of addictions, mental health, and co-occurring disorders.
The UNT Addiction Studies program provides exposure to addiction diagnoses, all levels of care, and competencies for working with adults and adolescents.
UNT's Wellness and Employment Learning Lab (UNTWELL) was created in 2016 to provide services for students to assist them with their personal and/or academic goals and provide hands-on learning opportunities for students.
This program also supports students and professionals who wish to continue career development in the addictions field and addresses numerous aspects of the treatment process, including prevention, intervention, assessment, residential treatment, and outpatient substance use treatment with adults and adolescents.
Our program supports the North Texas Rehabilitation Association and Eagle Peer Recovery student organizations. They can help further develop your skills and provide vital professional experiences.

Substance Use Disorder Treatment Certificate Courses You Could Take

Addiction Treatment Models (3hrs)
Provides an overview of treatment strategies used in the treatment of alcohol/drug use and dependence. Examines basic chemical dependency treatment service delivery systems within the context of alcohol and other drug use counseling theory.
Assessment in Rehabilitation (3hrs)
Principles, techniques and procedures used in the assessment process in rehabilitation, including assessments related to identification of issues of addiction, vocational assessments and situational assessments.
Addictions Counseling Competencies (3 hrs)
Focuses on familiarizing students with the core competencies necessary for effective interventions within addiction treatment settings and prepares students to apply these skills in alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) counseling practice.
Drugs and Alcohol(3hrs)
Covers the psychological, biological and behavioral effects of substance use and addiction with particular focus on the impact of alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, opiates, stimulants, depressants and hallucinogens on mind, body and behavior.
