Why Earn a Real Estate Degree?

UNT is one of the few universities in Texas that offers an undergraduate degree program in Real Estate. In the Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law (FIREL), we graduate experts who rent, buy and sell properties for clients or themselves, as well as:

  • Accompany clients to potential property sites
  • Prepare real estate contracts and work with many related experts
  • Calculate prospective rates of return
  • Manage commercial or residential properties

The program is supported by a strong UNT Real Estate Alumni Group which contributes time, mentoring, internships and scholarships. An active Student Real Estate Club, one of the largest clubs on the UNT campus, organizes guest speakers, field trips and fun activities.

As a part of the B.B.A. in Real Estate, students learn:

  • How to read, understand and negotiate contracts
  • How to prepare a Competitive Market Analysis CMA (all property types)
  • Investment Analysis and 11 rates of return for income properties
  • Property management and management plans

Real Estate Degree Highlights

In addition to being outstanding teachers, our faculty members are certified brokers, appraisers, right-of-way agents and consultants who remain current on trends and applications through research.
Scholarships sponsored by the department are available and students also have earned scholarships from organizations such as the International Council of Shopping Centers Foundation and the Commercial Real Estate Women Network, as well as from generous and successful alumni.
Faculty members have written numerous articles and books in their areas of expertise and incorporate their experiences and research into the course curriculum.

Many students are eligible to sit for the real estate licensing exam after completing only a few courses. This license is required for sales agents in Texas.

Real Estate Degree Courses You Could Take

Real Estate Finance (3 hrs)
Examination of the process and methods of financing both residential and commercial properties. Primary focus is on the lender’s perspective in mortgage loan analysis.
Property Management (3 hrs)
Examination of the process and methods of managing real property assets. Topics include property leasing, marketing, maintenance, personal supervision, value analysis, taxation and cash-flow analysis.
Real Estate Investments (3 hrs)
Analysis of real estate investments during the origination, operation and termination phases. Primary emphasis is on financial feasibility and cash-flow analysis.
Real Estate Valuation (3 hrs)
Theory and methods of residential and income property appraisal. Topics include real estate market analysis, highest and best use analysis, and capitalization techniques. Income property valuation techniques are emphasized.
Real Estate Law and Contracts (3 hrs)
Study of the legal principles governing real estate transactions with an emphasis on promulgated contracts. Topics include contract law, estates in land, types of ownership, deeds, mortgages, title insurance, agency and homestead.
Principles of Real Estate (3 hrs)
Survey of real estate principles, including real estate market, financial, investment and legal analysis. Home ownership and real estate investment for personal benefit are emphasized.
