Why earn a degree in Voice Performance?

UNT's Bachelor of Music with a major in performance and a specialization in voice provides students training to develop their native vocal talent and help them focus their musicianship through the study and performance of music from various periods and genres.

Our program will prepare students to apply for continued study in master’s graduate performance degrees at the highest quality institutions and to help especially gifted students prepare for immediate entry into the professional arena as performers and teachers.

We encourage students to investigate an expanded array of professional opportunities in the field of music and introduce students to successful individuals who are working as performers, teachers, coaches, and as professional agents through periodic master classes held on our campus. Students will prepare for professional careers in music through student participation in external performances, lectures/master classes and cultural exchanges.

This degree prepares you for a career as a soloist or as a member of an ensemble. In addition to performing, you may teach private voice lessons at a high school or university.

Voice Performance Degree Highlights

We provide abundant opportunities for you to perform with on- and off-campus groups. Vocal ensembles sponsored by our college are: A Cappella Choir, Concert Choir, Men's and women's choruses and University Singers.

Our faculty members are dedicated teachers and nationally and internationally known performers who have performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Minnesota Opera Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra and many others.

We're one of the nation's most comprehensive music colleges and offer opportunities to meet some of the world's top music scholars and artists through specialized lectures and events hosted by various divisions in the college.

Being near Dallas and Fort Worth gives students additional performance opportunities including those with the Dallas Bach Society, Texas Camerata, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra and symphony orchestras in Irving, Plano and Richardson.

Our facilities include the Murchison Performing Arts Center, which houses the Winspear PerformanceHall and the Lyric Theater. Both performance halls, as well as the center's large rehearsal space, have state-of-the-art acoustics.

The College of Music has a rich tradition in music and is attended by talented musicians from all over the world.

What Can You Do With A Degree in Voice Performance?

Some of our graduates have performed with the Royal Opera House, the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opera. Others have worked with leading symphony orchestras and early music groups, are faculty members at prominent colleges and universities or have distinguished private voice studios. Our prominent alumni include:

Sopranos Patricia Racette and Emily Pulley, tenor Scott Scully and baritone Michael Mayes, who've all performed with the Metropolitan Opera.
Bass Mark McCrory, who sang the role of Marco in William Bolcom's A View from the Bridge in the world premiere at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Voice Performance Degree Courses You Could Take

Diction/pronunciation skills for singing in English. Introduction to phonetic analysis of vocal music in English.

Continuation of MUAG 3800. Focuses on refining physical skills, the introduction of group choral training, choral rehearsal techniques and aural development skills.

Basic knowledge of respiration, phonation, resonation and articulation; concepts and techniques for the teaching of singing. Laboratory demonstrations and studio observations for students of voice, choral conducting and composition.

Practical operatic experience in performing portions of or complete operas; integration of music, acting and staging of an opera.

Comprehensive coverage of stylistic developments, genres, and creative figures in Western art music from the Classic period to the present.

Upper-level applied music, private lessons. Variable credit for majors.
