Why Earn a Technical Communication Certificate?

The Technical Communication Certificate prepares students to pursue careers in technical writing and editing, web content writing and management, information architecture, online content/social media editing, and e-learning design. Students apply research-driven approaches to create and adapt content to solve complex problems in technical communication workplaces. Students connect with workplace professionals through client projects, virtual and global teamwork, mentorships, and emerging technologies. These experiences enable students to develop unique strengths in digital, usability, and science/health/medical communication.

Technical Communications offers five scholarships.
Alum Faith Peralta is the president of the Lone Star Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication.
Dr. Kathryn Raign recently published a study on Ancient Women’s Role in Technical Writing.
The Eagle Technical Communicators (ETC), a student-led organization provides students with opportunities to network with tech comm professionals and learn about emerging topics.
The Society for Technical Communication (STC) recently awarded the Jay R. Gould Award for Excellence in Teaching to Dr. Kim Sydow Campbell, professor in the Department of Technical Communication.
UNT students hold positions in technical writing in the healthcare and medical industries (often referred to as medical writers) specialize in communicating health-related topics effectively.

Technical Communication Certificate Courses You Could Take

Technical Writing (3 hrs)
Expository writing, especially for science, pre-engineering and business students.
Digital Media for Professional Communication (3 hrs)
Combines theory and hands-on experience to focus on how a variety of emerging technologies, including mobile and social media, are used in professional settings.
Usability and User Experience in Technical Communication (3 hrs)
Introduction to the theories and methodologies associated with assessing and measuring the usability and user experience of documents, software, web sites, mobile applications and other technical or professional interfaces. Methods may include card sorting, think aloud protocol, interviews, observations, cognitive walkthroughs, task analysis, heuristic evaluations and eye tracking, among others.
The Profession of Technical Communication (3 hrs)
Provides a foundation for understanding technical communication as a profession. Focuses on the competencies required for information product creation; the tools used by technical communication professionals; collaboration techniques for effective team-based projects; and professional development through interaction with industry professionals.
