UNT Admission Requirements for Transfer Students

If you have more than 44 college credit hours:

  • Minimum college 2.0 GPA (4.0 system) and eligible to return to institution(s) attended

If you have 30-44 college credit hours:

  • Minimum college 2.25 GPA (4.0 system) and eligible to return to institution(s) attended

If you have 15-30 college credit hours:

  • Minimum college GPA of a 2.5 and be eligible to return to the institutions attended

If you have FEWER than 15 college credit hours:

  • Minimum college GPA of a 2.5 and a High School 3.0 or higher unweighted GPA 
  • UNT encourages you to send your SAT and ACT scores but they are optional

Admissions Update: Students that have less than 15 hours and are without an SAT or ACT score can still join the Mean Green Family. Simply apply via ApplyTexas or the Common App and we will holistically review your application based on your GPA, class rank and other academic criteria.

International students will have additional admission requirements

Eagle Bound Program Admission Partnerships: UNT maintains Admission Partnership agreements with several community colleges through the Eagle Bound Program. See if your community college participates in the Eagle Bound Program.

Individual Review of Application

Individual Review is an automatic process whereby UNT Admissions reviews the application of any student who does not meet minimum admission requirements. If you are eligible for Individual Review an email will be sent to you with information on required documentation and how to upload the documents to your portal. 

Factors that may help determine academic readiness under the individual review provision may include, but are not limited to, the following: school attended, courses taken, employment experience, special abilities, individual achievements, leadership activities, public service, and extra-curricular activities. Additional Information for Non-Traditional Applicants

Transient (Visiting) or Summer Visiting Students

If you are an undergraduate student pursuing a degree at another U.S. college or university who wants to take a course at UNT for one semester then return to your home institution, apply as a transient.

Transient students must complete an application prior to the application priority date, pay the non-refundable application fee, and submit an official transcript from their most recent college or university attended. The transcript must reflect a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA (4.0 system) and that the student is in good standing (eligible to return) and not on academic probation or suspension from their previous institutions.

Transient students that decide to continue at UNT after their semester will need to reapply as a transfer student and submit transcripts from all previously attended colleges. The student must meet all admission requirements for a new transfer student prior to their second semester of enrollment at UNT. If a student initially applies as a regular transfer student and is denied admission, the student cannot change their application type to transient.

Summer transient students may return to UNT for subsequent summers by reapplying and submitting an updated transcripts.

Fresh Start for Transfer Students Last Enrolled 10 or More Years Ago

Students who have college credits that are at least 10 years old may seek admission to UNT without consideration of that academic work. Contact the UNT Office of Undergraduate Admissions before acceptance.

If you're a Texas Resident and apply for admission to Texas public colleges or universities as an undergraduate, you may be able to begin a new course of study with a clear academic record. 

If you have credits for college courses taken ten or more years prior to the planned enrollment date, those credits and grades can be waived under the "Academic Fresh Start" law if you invoke it at the time of application.

Please remember: this is an all or nothing option. You cannot pick and choose which courses to ignore and which courses to count. If you choose the "Academic Fresh Start" option, you will not receive any credit for any courses you took over ten years ago.

This means that courses taken previously:

  • Cannot be used to fulfill new prerequisite requirements;
  • Cannot be counted toward your new degree; and
  • Will not be counted in any future G.P.A. calculations.

Academic Fresh Start clears only your academic record, not the number of semesters you have been in higher education. The maximum number of semesters for receiving federal Pell Grants is 12, which must include all of the time you have spent.
